Tip Tuesday: Homemade Playdough

Hi guys!  After much trial and error, I'm happy to report that we have found a winner!!

Because, you know that not everything you read on the internet is true.... and that also goes for recipes. But this one is super easy and turns out perfectly!

When winter is dragging on and your little kids (read that as "everyone in the house") are getting antsy, playdough is a lifesaver!

Ruthie made this for her Bible class.  It was such a hit that she's made several more batches.

You probably already have all the ingredients.  If you skip the cream of tartar, it will still turn out OK, it's just not as boingy.  (If that's a word.)

Homemade Playdough

1 cup flour
1 cup water
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
1/3 cup salt
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
food coloring
scent (optional)

Mix together all the ingredients, except the food coloring, in a 2 quart saucepan.
Cook over low/med heat, stirring.  Once it begins to thicken, add the food coloring.  Continue stirring until the mixture is much thicker and begins to gather around the spoon.
Remove the dough onto wax paper or a plate to cool a bit.  Knead until smooth.

That's it!
Each batch takes less than 10 minutes total.  Just to give you an idea of how much the recipe makes, each one of those colors is a separate batch.  It's about 3 normal play dough containers worth.  Store in a ziplock bag or tupperware.  It lasts at least as long as store bought.

We added a different scent to each color.... just use your kitchen flavorings like almond, anise, peppermint, etc.  We think it makes playing more pleasant.  We'll call it aromatherapy dough.  ; )

And when you're all done making it, you can have a frog-sculpting contest!
That's always fun!

Alright, well, there ya have it.

Get out there and make some dough!

: )

  1. Need to do this! I can't keep them in playdough! I once did yellow (different recipe though) - The color seemed to rub off on things. Any problems with that?

    1. Hmmm...I don't think so. We used the regular liquid food coloring and the gel type from the cake decorating stuff. It doesn't take much of the concentrated gel dye. (just a toothpick full) We haven't tried yellow yet. Let me know how this works for ya!
